The distance and the heat haze limited viewing to little more than the outline of the bird. We finally went north a short distance into Anne Arundel county and found a hospitable homeowner who allowed us to scope from a point more-or-less directly west of the net array (and therefore closer), and thus obtained somewhat more satisfactory views. Conveniently, cormorants, gulls, and Great Blue Herons perched on neighboring poles provided direct size and shape comparisons, as did Ospreys flying nearby. Later in the afternoon, we had quite good looks at five Brown Pelicans from Cove Point in Calvert County. There is another net array to the east and somewhat south of the beach at Cove Point just to the east of the (now fenced-off) Coast Guard Station. This beach is sign-posted "private" but, again, we were fortunate to find a homeowner on the trail into the beach who graciously allowed us to look. All pelicans were seen in flight, originally over, or near, the net array. Three disappeared to the south, but two flew north, passed us quite close to the beach, and disappered over the large metal structure in the bay to the north-west.
