A small addition to Marshall's wonderful note about Brown Pelicans
in the Bay: They are persistent post-breeding wanderers and the number of
upper Bay records should increase substantially. With the expansion of the
breeding range north along the Atlantic Coast has come a steady increase in
records from August-November from New Jersey to Massachusetts. There is no
reason not to think that the same thing will happen in the Bay and the
Potomac River.
Not on his list of Anne Arundel records (because I did not send it
in) was a single bird I saw (and pointed out to my parents) flying off of
Ft. Smallwood on September 25, 1990. Unfortunately it was going south and I
did not see it enter Baltimore waters, particularly frustrating because I
was living in California at the time of the Liberty Lake bird and missed
it. It is the only time I have lived outside of the state of Maryland, a
mistake I hope never to repeat.
