Claudia's book still has good advice (which I don't have with me here in Ohio). I've had luck the last 3 yrs near the second house on the left (after you've broken out of the woods and into the swamp). I think it's roughly 8 miles south from Henry's Crossroad. Try parking at the house and listening there. Plan B: walk south about 1/4 mile and listen again. Plan C: drive north, stopping every 1/4 mile and get out and listen until your reach the 1st [northernmost] house. Be sure to take a tape along, but Black Rails are notorious for not necessarily responding with the kerk-a-doo call...but...you may get a bird or two to "growl" in response to the tape at this time of year... Don't forget 42 gallons of bug juice. Also, Barn Owl traditionally nested in the town of Elliott. You could hear them hissing on a summer's evening. Last year, Marshall Iliff, Todd Day, and I had a Barn Owl perched on a telephone wire north of the first house on Elliott Island Rd, maybe 1-2 miles out of the woods on July 18 on our July Big Day. Also, Yellow-throated Warbler can be found up in your neck of the woods near the entrance to Liberty Dam Trail. (BBC trip had one in late April there). -Greg Miller (still in Ohio) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages with Yahoo!
