It is my ASSUMPTION that many (most?) of these birds are dispersing northward from the nesting vicinity (Dorchester County) during the day and returning back to Dorchester to roost. I am not sure exactly where they roost in Dorchester, but I assume it is on protected islands and sandbars. There simply aren't many of those farther north in the Bay with the exception of the Poplars and Bodkin Island, and those clearly aren't major roosting areas (yet). I'd be interested to know what time of day some of these pelicans have been seen - all mine have been after noon but before 6 pm. Last Thursday when I saw 16 at North Beach at 4 pm there was only one remaining at 6 pm. Just guessing of course, but Danny Poet's post seems to reinforce that guess. Much to my surprise I heard from Paul Spitzer the other day that he saw a small flock of eight pelicans 15 June flying high (sev hundred feet up) up the Choptank from Windy Hill Landing, Trappe, Talbot Co., looking east towards Caroline County. This would be a first Caroline Co. record. This continues to amaze me...
