It was indeed an oversight as we were unaware of a breeding record from Charles County at publication time. While we used atlas data in our research, the final atlas wasn't released until after the Yellow Book. The atlas highlighted a few additional breeding records (mentioned below) as well as numerous probable breeding records which we were not aware of (would have been shown as a "?" on the graphs). I do not attempt to summarize those below. There were a few errors that crept into the graphs. I must accept full responsibility for this, as "chief editor" (Bob drafted the graphs, Jim constructed them on computer, and I was supposed to edit them). So...a couple errors you may want to correct are: Hooded Merganser: As pointed out by Patty, breeding record omitted from Charles Co.. Black-necked Stilt: Not known from Wicomico County at publication time. The hollow square is from DORCHESTER county. Of course now it would be a solid block with a "B", given recent Elliott Island records. American Avocet: We neglected to include a small dot for Queen Anne's Co., though there is a record from Horsehead. Baird's Sandpiper: We omitted a small dot from Talbot Co., though there are several records (mostly from Easton WTP). Red-headed Woodpecker: Confirmed breeding in Queen Anne's County during the atlas. Bank Swallow: Confirmed breeding in Wicomico Co. during the atlas. Also a dot on the map appears to be in Washington Co. (perhaps Norm and Fran can tell us whether this was MD or WV...). This would upgrade breeding status to current (change "H" to "B"). Brown Creeper: Found breeding in Dorchester Co. on the atlas. Sedge Wren: Historical breeder from Baltimore Co., according to the atlas. Warbling Vireo: A confirmed record from the atlas may be either Caroline Co. (and thus a first confirmed nesting) or DE. Please let us know if anyone has info on this... Audubon's Warbler: In the back section on subspecies and races, Matt Hafner pointed out that the Dorchester County symbol should be a hollow star rather than a solid dot. Common Yellowthroat: Known breeder from Worcester County as Rick pointed out in fall 1998 and Mark recently mentioned... Bullock's Oriole: Although we did not hav the information at our disposal at the time, the Anne Arundel record (whcih also accounts for the Nov-Jan record in the bar graphs) was rejected by the MD/DCRC and was apparently a dull Baltimore Oriole. A few other typos crept in... Replace Greater Black-backed Gull w/ Great Black-backed Gull. For consistency sake, replace Skua sp. with Catharacta sp.. In the Records Committee Review List replace Northern Raven w/ Common Raven. We have discussed a new edition and may publish one at some point. A number of changes can be justified based on new information (i.e. more summer ducks in the state than shown in the Yellow Book (Ruddy is annual), annual occurrence of _hutchinsii_ Canada Geese, etc...). Additionally over 100 new county records have occurred (see the MOS website link mentioned previously by Fran), not to mention numerous date extensions and new breeding records. If you have other additions, deletions, comments, critiques, or criticisms please let us know!
