The most likely small bat is the Little Brown Bat, Myotis lucifugus. There are several other species of Myotis which would be possible, as well as the Pipistrelle, Pipistrellus subflavus. There are other small bats which are much less likely. In addition the medium sized bats are not grossly larger than the small species. These would include the Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus fuscus, and the Red Bat, Lasiurus borealis, well as other less likely species. My money is on the Little Brown, or the Pipistrelle.

As for the butterfly, it is likely a sulfur of some species. This is a large group, with quite a bit of variation. I'm not going to try to identify it to the species level, probably even if it were in hand!

Best wishes,

ospreyers,

I would be grateful for ID help with a bat and butterfly seen recently in
my NW DC yard; my wildlife expertise is confined primarily to avifauna.
Tonight I saw a couple of small bats chasing insects at 10-30 feet.  One
called, something between a squawk and a bark.  Which species are likely
to be seen in the city?

A few days ago, I saw a butterfly that I didn't recognize (I only know the
very commonest ones.  It was about the size and shape of a cabbage white,
but yellow -- more lemony than a sulphur, which I think of as yellow-gray
or -brown.  It had white spots on the wings, each surrounded by a thin
black band.  At rest the band was not evident..  Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

rob
