I will report both the positives and the negatives here in case they are useful to others: 10 AM - Kent Narrows from the Narrows Restaurant - NEGATIVE approx. 11 AM to 12:30 PM - Talbot County: Claiborne boat landing, Wade Point, Lowe's Wharf - ALL NEGATIVE 1 PM - Tilghman Black Creek Park, on west side of Rt 33, just north of Knapp's Narrows, the waterway that separates Tilghman Island from the mainland - finally, 2 Brown Pelicans hovering momentarily over the net array out in the Bay to the west of the very west end of the park. 1:30 PM - at least 4-5 Brown Pelicans on the net array far to the east of the east end of Circle Drive, a loop that starts almost opposite to Black Creek Park. These birds could have been in Harris Creek, but more likely in the Bay itself. Visability poor due to distance and heat haze, but ID safe. 3 PM - back at Kent Narrows - NEGATIVE 3:10 PM -- Good luck strikes ! Kindly gentleman asks us what we are looking for. Answer: "Pelicans". Response: "I saw a bunch of them 20 minutes ago". He then gave us directions to a near-by locality and volunteered permission to enter the private land on which it was located. 3:30 PM - As many as 12 Brown Pelicans watched at close range as they fed actively near shore. Much coming and going to a nearby landing site, where many more were seen through the scope. There were at the very least a total of 20, counting those feeding, but more likely 30, or more, in the area. Constant flight activity, distance, inability to see all parts of the landing site, and some haze precluded an accurate count. This last spot could well be the source of the pelicans that appear to be occasional visitors to the seawall at Kent Narrows. At least it appears they have a good feeding area and a possible roost site available. Unfortunately, given the private ownership of the spot and the "Do Not Enter" signs in evidence there, I feel constrained not to be more specific. I will try to locate a responsible person (or persons) and see if some arrangement can be made that would permit access of birders to the area by mutual consent.
