Went east along the towpath from Sycamore Landing to Horsepen Branch, then north along the stream to the western fields, and back to Sycamore Landing Rd. on the road through the woods. Found males singing vigorously in the four known territories along this stretch of the towpath. Three of these birds are in the woods north of the canal bed, but the one at milepost 27 is in trees over the canal bed and could probably be seen with a little effort. The one nearest Horsepen Branch moves around quite a bit, going north along the stream where it meets two Northern Parulas- one which sings its regular song and the other giving its version of a cerulean. After walking up the stream 15-20 minutes I heard a very soft cerulean song. Looking up 90 feet or so in as yet unidentified tree I found a male forgaging. This is the first cerulean I have found this year away from the river and would be my 13th territory in the area. Other birds of interest were a Barred Owl and a redstart feeding a fledgling cowbird, which I had found 12 days earlier. The adventure of the day was rescuing a smallish snapping turtle on River Road by holding it by the tail with the right hand and driving with the left until I reached water.
