From south of Baltimore, take I 695 across the Key Bridge ($1 toll) to exit 43, Sprrows Point (should that be re-named Pelican Point?). When the ramp splits, stay to the left, and then turn left onto Bethlehem Boulevard (Md Rt 158). Proceed east, crossing North Point Boulevard (Md 151); Behlehem Blvd becomes North Point Road. Follow North Point Road 0.9 mile past Miller Island Road (on left) to park entrance on left. ($2 entrance fee). Continue the full length of the entrance drive past one parking lot, through fields and woods to parking lot at end. Take 'scope to water's edge or pier and scope the concrete pier in the distance to your left (north). That's where most of the birds were hanging around, along with some cormorants, gulls and terns. You might also want to scope the lighthouse for a little lump on one of the railings, which would be one of the two resident Peregrine Falcons, although you won't see much identifiable detail at that distance. By color I was able to determine that I was seeing an adult (some white showing) rather than an immature. From the other direction on the Beltway (from Towson or Harford County), take exit 42 Edgemeer/Fort Howard. When the ramp splits, stay right and enter southbound North Point Boulevard, Get immediately in the left lane and turn left at light onto North Point Rd., follow it 0.9 mile to park entrance on left as above. I found the pelican population to be about evenly split between adult-plumaged and immature-plumaged birds.
