Highlights were : Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, Black-Crowned Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Flamingo, Sun Bittern, Andean Condor, ect. ( ALRIGHT- we were at the National Zoo!) We had a fabulous time with a special VIP tour arranged by one of our club members. The bird house curator took us on a two and a half hour tour with special behind the scenes stuff. He is an amazing fellow with stories galore about all the birds there. He is a fountain of information! We were able to see the flamingo chicks "up close and personal". The tour of the bird cafeteria was also fascinating with the bags of frozen mice, shrimp puree (for the flamingo chicks) and monster size mealworms and grubs. The Night herons are incredible to watch with just fledged young EVERYWHERE. There are hundreds of them. As luck would have it the Golden Lion tamarins gave birth to twins last night and we were able to see the newborn babies. They are the most gorgeous creatures and we watched them for almost an hour. The father is touchingly attentive and sweet, hovering over mom and infants with gentle touches and grooming. A great day and great group! Bonnie Ott (Ellicott city) p.s. Great Spangled Frittilary in the garden right now. ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
