On the way we stopped at the site near Laytonsville (posted earlier on Mdosprey) for Red-headed Woodpeckers. This is the second time we have visited this site, the first only a day or two after the initial post, and I regret to say that neither time has there been any luck with the Woodpeckers -- no sight, no sound -- so perhaps they have dispersed if (as was speculated) they had recently-fledged young. If anyone goes out there and sees the birds, please let us know! Anyway, on to Hipsley Mill Road near Annapolis Rock Rd., just over the Patuxent in Howard County. Evening singers included Chat, Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, Ovenbird, Yellowthroat. Finally at about 9 pm we were rewarded with two Whip-poor-wills calling, unfortunately a little too distantly to attempt to see. A bonus were three Woodcock flying over at about the same time. The Whips called for about 15 minutes then fell silent. We didn't hear any other night birds. So home and to bed... Cheers, Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
