Sorry I wasn't able to reply on a timely basis. I have no idea whether the larvae overwinter. My guess is probably not, however I haven't noticed the new adults leaving the cavities. It seems that the bees started making their tunnels in late April/early May. Putting the ceiling up in March may be a good time. Yesterday we noticed the beginning of some wood splintering on the front porch, but not enough to penetrate into a bee tunnel. There is a tunnel entrance just under the splintering however - the big guy will probably be back to complete the work. The big question is - how do the woodpeckers locate the tunnels, particularly for the Pileateds which, to the best of my knowledge and observations, seldom come close to the house. Do they hear the larvae moving around in the tunnels? I observed the pileated eating the larvae from his excavation on the back porch. Got some video footage of it also.
