At Violettes Lock, zero swallows and little other activity besides a nice close male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER out in the open over the canal. At Hughes Hollow, some sort of dog training was going on in the front right impoundment. We were both wondering if that was permissible, as we saw two people canoing through the impoundment. Needless to say we saw nothing interesting, or even much at all in any impoundment. At Lily Pons, none of last week's Great Egrets were in evidence. Along Oland Road Lisa spotted and I identified a Variegated Fritillary. Along Cap Stine Road we saw and heard about 4 DICKCISSELS, along with Grasshopper Sparrow and Northern Bobwhite. No Savannah Sparrows. In Culpeper County, *Va.* the SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERs continue on County Route 647 just west of US 522. We, joined by George Jett and his friend Gwen, spent an hour or so observing the flycatchers. The female was incubating and at one point left the nest for about 5 or 10 minutes. The male landed on the road for couple of minutes, and as we were leaving we came close to it as it sat on a low road-side fence. Further west on 647 we admired several singing DICKCISSELS, a family of GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, and what seemed to be a half dozen FIERY SKIPPERS. Is it possible to have that species in early July? I rarely look at skippers but these were close and fairly bright and plain yellow on the undersides, as I remember this morning. Happy Fourth!
