The cu-cu-cu call of the Black-bill is very rapid while that of the Yellow-bi= ll is slower. Both are evenly-metered. How fast were the described calls? The ka-ka-ka-ka-kow-kow-kow is also typical Yellow-bill. Black-bills are rare breeders outside of Western Maryland but could occur anywhere. More information is desirable if anyone has summering Black-bills.
