In addition to the sudden reappearance, or perhaps de-cloaking of the 2 Canada Warbler families, we've been seeing (more than hearing, which I think adds credence to the dispersal theory) a number of birds that weren't in certain transects for nigh on 2 months. Most are common birds not worth mentioning, save for their decided appearance in areas where they weren't recorded. Most of these are known to breed pretty close by. A lot of this includes edge breeders or brush breeders that are suddenly showing up in the interior - Catbirds, Hooded Warblers, Carolina Wrens, Indigo Buntings, etc etc. But on Friday one of the other techs had a Golden-crowned Kinglet in Savage River SF. This is not one of the higher elevation points. Though I understand there is a small number of them breeding in the county, we haven't had any observations in our plots. Then this weekend while showing my girlfriend around Antietam Battlefield, we had great looks at a couple adult Red-headed Woodpeckers, close to stop #5 on the self-guided tape tour. Out in the open in a field with just a few trees. They were on the ground, at eye-level on a fence, 6 feet up in the small trees around there. Naturally we were in her car and my camera was in mine. We watched them through the car window from 5 feet away! Those suckers show up in the strangest places when they're not breeding...
