Observed 7 Upland Sandpipers yesterday (7/10/00) in
the helicopter operating area of the airfield at
Patuxent River Naval Air Station, St. Mary's County,
MD. Don't know how much earlier the birds may have
arrived, as I didn't get onto the airfield at all last
week.

Also rescued a pair of Chimney Swift fledglings today.
The birds had apparently left the nest, but weren't
quite able to fly yet (or at least not well). They
were crawling about on the floor in the fireplace,
squawking and making quite a racket. This all took
place in the middle of a meeting in the VIP conference
room of Building 2189 on the Naval Air Station. The
birds had apparently fallen or flown (?) down below
the metal flue and couldn't get back above it. I
reached up into the chimney and placed both birds on
the chimney wall above the flue. Both immediately
began to climb back up the rough inner surface of the
chimney.
