NEOTROPICAL MIGRATORY BIRDS: Habitat conservation bill becomes law ... ========================================================= 1. NEOTROPICAL MIGRATORY BIRD BILL BECOMES LAW * Great news! In an important victory for birds, President Clinton sign= ed into law the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act, the only bill i= n this Congress that directly helps songbirds. Signed on July 20, the new l= aw establishes a fund to support partnership programs that will conserve and enhance habitat of neotropical migratory birds such as the Kirtland's Warbler, Hermit Thrush, Black-capped Vireo and Kentucky Warbler. At leas= t 75% of the money will go to projects in the Caribbean and Latin America, where the birds spend their winters. It authorizes $5 million per year f= or five years and funds a maximum of 25% of the money for each project. The remainder will be raised or contributed by partners such as businesses, non-governmental organizations and foreign nations. Approximately 5 billion birds of 500 species, including many endangered species, migrate to North America from wintering grounds in Latin America and the Caribbean annually. Many thanks to Senator Abraham (R-MI), who championed this legislation through the Senate, along with Senator Daschl= e (D-SD) and the late Senator Chafee (R-RI), the original co-sponsors. .... ** To view the text of any bill mentioned here, go to the Library of Congress' Thomas Web site at http://thomas.loc.gov and search for the bil= l name or number. ** To visit Audubon's Action Center, go to and click on the "Take Action" icon. ----------------------------------------------------------- Note: This publication is distributed when Congress is in session. ----------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe to the Advisory, send a message to policy@audubon.org with y= our name, e-mail address, and mailing address. ----------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the paper version of the Advisory, send a message to policy@audubon.org. ------------------------------------------------------------ Contact Congress: (202) 224-3121 Contact Us: National Audubon Society 1901 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Suite 1100 Washington, DC 20006 Phone: 202-861-2242 Fax: 202-861-2242 policy@audubon.org http://www.audubon.org ========================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ========================================================================= ===========================================================================
