Fall season runs August 1st to January 15th, but usually start early because of non-raptors passing through. Sunny in early pm with increasing cloud cover to the west and east in mid afternoon and nearly mostly cloudy at the site around 4pm. Light cool breeze with wind from the W, then to NW in mid afternoon and back to W at 4pm. Raptor Migration Highlight: After yesterday absent, finally got some. Both Turkey Vultures headed SSE at 2:54pm. Non-Raptor Migration Highlight: A busy day for swallows and season high numbers of non-raptor for July. A new yard and ridge list with #117 at yard and #127 at ridge, the Great Egret was spotted at distance over the ridge and the yard, headed SWW at 5:52pm. Other seen, a kettle of 8 Chimney Swifts and 3 Bank Swallows at 2pm headed SW, 1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow at 2:37pm headed W, 2 Barn Swallow at 4:52pm headed SW, 2 Barn Swallow at 4:53pm headed SW, 2 Barn Swallow at 5:17pm headed E, and 1 Barn Swallow at 6:01pm headed E. Also a Barn Swallow at 6:01pm headed N and was not counted. Butterfly Migration Highlight: n/a Non-Migrants Highlight: Plenty of Silver-spotted Skippers at butterfly bushes. Topography of the Site: - steep ridge about 180-200' above Belair Rd. - about 260' above sea level - It runs northeast to southwest - the first ridge west of the Chesapeake Bay - 12 miles from bay, 5 miles NW of Back River - my hawkwatch is 150 yards west of the ridge - Fairwood Ave runs along side of ridge My hawkwatch is located in my backyard. Most of the hawk flights arrive from the northeast and a few from the north and northeast-east.
