Walked around the impoundments, then along Hunting Quarter Rd. to the middle parking lot, then to the towpath along the road, back w= est to Horsepen Hiker-Biker and then returned to the impoundments. Ended up with a respectable 48 species. Best birds were a Great Egret at the pond near the towpath(first seen on 7-16), a Willow Flycatcher calling briefl= y in the buttonbush marsh, and a Prothonotary Warbler along the east-west dyke. Still some nesting activity going on. Species heard singing includ= ed Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher,Red-eyed Vireo, Carolina Wren, Hou= se Wren, Wood Thrush, Common Yellowthroat, Scarlet Tanager, Field Sparrow, S= ong Sparrow, Cardinal, and Indigo Bunting. Swallow numbers are increasing had 140 along River Road and 15 in a dead tree along the river. There are fairly good size mats of water stargrass in the Potomac, but I only saw 2 Wood Ducks in them.
