First, we stopped at = the site in Lanham, MD to look for the reported Common Moorhens. What an = incredible place! It looked like a chunk of the Everglades had been carved = out and transplanted to Maryland. The birds were not there despite looking = for almost an hour. We did return later in the afternoon and were = successful in locating one adult Common Moorhen at the intersection of = Maryland St. and Hiland Ave. There were also many Wood Ducks and Green = Herons there. In between visits to the swamp, we headed out to Oland Rd. and Rt. 85 to = look for the Loggerhead Shrikes. As soon as we pulled up to the field on = the SE of the intersection of Lilypons, Oland and Rt. 85, we found an = adult Loggerhead Shrike sitting on the closest set of hay bales that = parallels Lilypons Rd. It flew around hunting then would come back to = perch on top of the bales. It was in the company of a couple of Northern = Mockingbirds which made a nice comparison since the field guides make such = a fuss about how similar they are.
