Note: July 24th had only 1 Barn Swallow and yesterday with 2 Barn and 2 Tree Swallows. Fall season runs August 1st to January 15th, but usually start early because of non-raptors passing through. Wind from the SW. Raptor Migration Highlight: Season first American Kestrel at 10:45am headed SW. Non-Raptor Migration Highlight: Couple of kettles with 4 Chimney Swifts and 1 Tree Swallow at 10:55am headed SW and second with 3 Northern Rough-winged Swallows and 1 Tree Swallow at 1:31pm headed SW. Other seen, 1 Barn Swallow at 12:02pm headed SW. Butterfly Migration Highlight: Second Monarch of the season and season first Red Admiral at the bushes for a while and both left for SW, with Red Admiral at 1:53pm and Monarch at 1:56pm. Non-Migrants Highlight: Increasing numbers of Silver-spotted Skippers and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails along with few Cabbage White, one Spicebush Swallowtail, and one Hoary Edge at the bushes along the driveway while cutting dead flowers. Topography of the Site: - steep ridge about 180-200' above Belair Rd. - about 260' above sea level - It runs northeast to southwest - the first ridge west of the Chesapeake Bay - 12 miles from bay, 5 miles NW of Back River - my hawkwatch is 150 yards west of the ridge - Fairwood Ave runs along side of ridge My hawkwatch is located in my backyard. Most of the hawk flights arrive from the northeast and a few from the north and northeast-east.
