Paula, I took the Smith Island boat a few weeks ago and also skipped the meal. However, they announced that besides the buffet meal, the restaurant served sandwiches as well. There is also a fast food restaurant across the street from the main one (I will be diplomatic and won't comment on it), so there are several sources for food. I just brought a sack lunch with me. The first time I visited, I took my bike. This last time, a friend and I opted to rent a golf cart. We didn't realize that the area which you can cover with the golf cart is quite limited -- can't get out to the marshes, so I'd take a bike if I were going again. There is not enough time to see everything in the short time that you are there but it is better than nothing. Have fun -- it's a great trip and the weekend weather forecast looks wonderful.
