I obviously disagree--I think that listservs have gone a long way toward doing away with the notion that only some select group of "insiders" gets to know about a rare bird. However, the fact that the news gets out very quickly now and to a relatively large group of people who probably would never have heard about the bird in the past puts a larger responsibility on those running after a rare bird. As someone else noted here, even ONE irresponsible birder is too many. I don't want MDOsprey to be the cause for irresponsible birders going places they shouldn't or acting in ways they shouldn't. If the threat of removal shakes people up enough to make them think twice in the future--all to the good. If not, then removal from the list will at least remove the temptation, perhaps. The discussion stemming from my original posting about the Sandhill Crane problem (thanks to Les Roslund for letting me know about the problem) may have gone a long way toward educating folks who subscribe to MDOsprey. It was a discussion that perhaps should be repeated every now and then. Believe me when I say that I won't bar someone from the list without good cause or capriciously, but also believe me when I say that I will bar them if I feel it will improve birders' images to the public.
