This is an update for the St. Mary's County, Maryland Kelp
Gull dated August 13, 2000.
The Kelp Gull was present between 9:30 and 10 a.m. on
Sunday, August 13, 2000, on the pier behind the Sea Breeze
Crabhouse in Sandgates, MD. After actively preening, it
flew over the parking lot of the adjacent seafood restaurant,
before returning to the same piling.
Birders from a Southern Maryland Audubon
Society field trip had scope looks at the Kelp Gull around
4 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, on a pier several houses
north of the Sea Breeze restaurant.
A quick stop at the Sea Breeze on Saturday, August 12,
at 9 a.m. did not find the Kelp Gull, and the restaurant
staff said they had not seen the bird during the week,
but they had seen in the week before. Reports of attempts
by birders are fewer than ever, so a definite pattern of
presence/absence is difficult to formulate.
The Kelp Gull is showing definite wear to its
feathers, with possibly a missing primary. The distinctive
mirror on P 10 is still more of a small fingernail now,
but still visible, especially from the underside when it is
preening or flying overhead.
If you need directions, please feel free to email
the transcriber.
