Best, Norm Here are the messages, in order (I think): From: "The Smudgekins" To: Subject: Fw: birdies singing during golf tournaments Date: Sunday, August 13, 2000 4:29 PM ----- Original Message ----- From: patneal To: Lola and Ted Oberman ; smudgekn@erols.com Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2000 7:14 AM Subject: birdies singing during golf tournaments L&T, J&J, Forgot to put this with my cell phone message. Last weekend there was a golf tournament at Castle Rock, Colorado. This weekend at Grand Blanc, Michigan. During both I've heard White-throated Sparrows singing. I've told my ARbird friends and they said that birdchat has been wondering if the TV commentators have a tape of songs going in the background. Have you guys heard anything about this? It is dirty golf, I think, to mislead us birders who keep a list of bird songs heard during golf tournaments. I e-mailed as a group three Grand Blanc, Michigan, ABAers about those golf course songs. One answer came from the owner of a Wild Bird Store. She has contacted CBS and is waiting to hear them say that, yes, the songs are being dubbed in. She has even identified a Canyon Wren! Now, in addition to White-throated Sparrows there are some hints of Canyon Wren and Thrush. Canyon Wren in Michigan? It is rather obvious that somebody is feeding a bird recording into the background of the announcers, one of whom is Ken Ventura. The tournament, the Buick Open, is being done by CBS Sportsline. The location is Warwick Hills Golf Club, Grand Blanc, MI. Today, Sunday, is the final round. (Tiger Woods is way behind.) Neal and I have a request: John, with all your talents at finding things on the internet, could you look around and find CBS and who is behind the bird song business? The number of birders who listen to golf games is amazing and the legions out there need some answers to this burning question: "Why is that bird singing in Michigan?" We who keep golf match life lists of birds-heard will have to start all over. If you can find an e-mail or snail mail address, we could pursue the question. Our phone book doesn't list CBS or the local affiliates. Amazingly these are not birds native to the location of the tournament. In fact, some are downright preposterous. The question is, are you dubbing-in bird calls in the backgrounds of your golf broadcasts? We really would like to know, because some of us keep lists of "bird calls heard during golf tournaments," and if you're dubbing them in, it makes our lists useless. Thank you in advance for your reply. Then I clicked on"SportsCenter" and eventually got to http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/feedback/feedback.htm which is a feedback page. The second paragraph, "SportsLine's Slug It Out," seemed logical, so I clicked on that. Then I filled out the e-mail form and sent it in. Tell everybody to wait a day or two and see what reply, if any, I get, and then we can start a big blizzard of e-mails to them, as well as to other sports outlets if necessary. Apparently things are slow on the outer banks.
