A mix of mostly sunny and partly cloudy on and off all day. Raptor Migration Highlight: Well, the NW wind help a little today. Cooper's Hawk at 11:10am headed SWW, American Kestrel at 11:50am headed SW and Turkey Vulture at 1:49pm headed SW. Non-Raptor Migration Highlight: Season first Red-breasted Nuthatch and Common Nighthawk. RB Nuthatch seen together at 10:17am headed W and first nighthawk at 8:08pm and second at 8:12pm and both headed SE. More good flight of swifts and Tree Swallows. Butterfly Migration Highlight: Now the Monarch finally pick up, one each at 10:53am, 11:43am, 11:54am, 12:00pm, 12:21pm, 12:28pm, 1:01pm, 1:31pm and 1:38pm and all headed SW except # 5 at 12:21pm headed SE. Topography of the Site: - steep ridge about 180-200' above Belair Rd. - about 260' above sea level - It runs northeast to southwest - the first ridge west of the Chesapeake Bay - 12 miles from bay, 5 miles NW of Back River - my hawkwatch is 150 yards west of the ridge - Fairwood Ave runs along side of ridge My hawkwatch is located in my backyard. Most of the hawk flights arrive from the northeast and a few from the north and northeast-east.
