Wind begin with N in early am, and changed to NNW as the hawkwatch open at 9am and to NW around 10:13am, back to NNW at 10:21am, before 11am to NW, after 11:20am to W for rest of the day. Sunny all day with very high thin clouds. Raptor Migration Highlight: They are picking up especially Broadies. First hawk was a Broadwing at 10:02am headed SW, following by Turkey Vulture at 10:13am headed SW, Sharpie at 10:21am headed S, Broadwing at 10:24am joined by other Broadwing at 10:25am and both headed SWW, Red-shouldered at 10:26am headed SW, 2 Broadwings at 10:36am headed W, and last Broadwing at 10:59am headed SW. All 9 hawks came in between 10-11am. Non-Raptor Migration Highlight: Season first BG Gnatcatcher at 10:34am at one of the maple tree and at 11am left for SW. Nice flock of 25 Cedar Waxwing at 10:10am headed SW. Slow day for swallows and other migrants. Butterfly Migration Highlight: Another Mourning Cloak at 10:34am headed SW. More Monarch, yay!! Sky codes: S= Sunny, PS= Partly Sunny, PC= Partly Cloudy, MC= Mostly Cloudy, R= Rain Backyard Hawk Watch is located at 3812 White Ave., between Belair Rd. and Walther Ave. in the Gardenville section in northeast Baltimore City. Topography of the Site: - steep ridge about 180-200' above Belair Rd. - about 260' above sea level - It runs northeast to southwest - the first ridge west of the Chesapeake Bay - 12 miles from bay, 5 miles NW of Back River - my hawkwatch is 150 yards west of the ridge - Fairwood Ave runs along side of ridge My hawkwatch is located in my backyard. Most of the hawk flights arrive from the northeast and a few from the north and northeast-east.
