You also might want to look at the Swarovskis--I think they should fall into your price range and would be worth a good look. I can't emphasize enough though that you should try, try, try. What works for me may be terrible for you, and vice versa. The more different binoculars you can actually try out under field conditions, the more likely you will be to find just the right pair. Whatever you do, don't buy mail order an untried brand of binoculars unless they come with an iron-clad return guarantee. I'm always sorry that I can't tell people exactly which binoculars to buy, but the choice really is a very personal one. I suggest you go out on as many bird club field trips as you can and badger your colleagues to let you try their bins. Most folks are more than happy to brag on their bins so this can be a good way to get the field experience you need. Best of luck and keep us apprised of your final decision!
