After enjoying the peeps et al. at the C and O Canal terminus in Cumberland (see JB Churchill's 8/30 message), I checked out the "PPG ponds" on 8/30 near the North Branch/lock 75 area of the canal east of Cumberland. I observed the following: Baird's sandpiper (juvenile) 1 Pectoral sandpiper 2 Killdeer 8 Least sandpiper 1 Spotted sandpiper 2 Solitary sandpiper 1 Also, just a reminder and a request regarding access at this location. I spoke with Mr. Ronnie Alexander, the manager for the facility, and he expressed his disappointment that during a very recent visit, a birder trespassed onto the property by going out between the "ponds". This is a problem for them from both liability and safety points of view. Please notify them when you arrive that you are there to look for birds, and then please stay outside of the fence as they request. We do not want to lose access to this interesting site!
