TRICOLORED HERON at the mouth of 4-mile Run this (Friday) evening from 6:15 to 6:25 pm. I read about the sighting of an imm. Trike at Hunting Creek on this week's Voice, and was hoping that it would find its way up river (hence the crossed fingers). So this morning, on my way to work, I stopped by the mouth of 4-mile Run. Tides weren't great, and I didn't see anything too unusual at that time. But when I stopped back there this evening, with lower tides and better conditions, my hopes were boosted. After scanning the hydrilla and the shoreline for a little while, I came across the bird in the upper reaches of the mouth (on the lefthand end of the mudflats, towards the GWMP bridge). Other birds of note: 2 Pied-billed Grebe 1 Am. Coot 1 Blue-winged Teal 1 Lesser Yellowlegs (shorebirds are sparse there this year) 2 Great Egret (also lower numbers than in previous years) Plus lots of the more typical species - Mallard, Wood Duck, Am. Black Duck, Great Blue Heron, Caspian & Forster's Terns, Double-crested Cormorant, Ring-billed, Laughing, and Great Black-backed Gull. 4-mile Run is the body of water on the south side of Washington National Airport. It is best viewed from the Washington Sailing Marina/Potowmack Landing Restaurant. Access is via the George Washington Mem. Parkway, either north or southbound.
