Maryland. Opening day was a bit of a yawner!! Skies- overcast, humidity- high, wind- zero to non-existent. From 7:30 AM - 11:30 PM counters D. Donham and L. Fisher observed: 1 imm. MERLIN in the 9 AM hour, that obligingly perched on a snag for 20 min, a good bird to start the count year!! 1 OSPREY 5 TURKEY VULTURE 1 UR Other migrants included YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO ( 3 ), WHITE-EYED VIREO ( 4 ), KINGBIRD ( 12 ), GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER (2 ) , EASTERN PEEWEE ( 1 ), RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD ( 1 ). There were also mixed flocks of TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, CHIMNEY SWIFTS, PURPLE MARTIN and BOBOLINK. A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was heard calling , and there were nice sightings of resident PILEATED and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. Leslie Fisher Cecil Co.
