Today, I got a call from Mark Hoffman who independant ly found the Eared Grebe (but not the Baird's) today around 1:00 p.m.. So apparently it has been present for some time - I am off to chase it now. This represents a first Caroline County record and is one I have long anticipated at Ridgely WWTP. Thanks to Mark for spreading the word about this bird. If you go to chase this bird PLEASE BE SURE TO ASK PERMISSION to enter th e facility. Often it is hard to find an employee but we need to be sure to stay on the good side of the staff here. The WWTP is open only about 8:00-4:30 (I will try to confirm this today) and is usually closed on weekends (sometimes it will be open, but that is essentially a fluke). Something like an Eared Grebe might be seen from just outside the closed gate if (and only if) you are willing to stand on the roof of your car. It sh ows up on the DeLorme p51 c4. To get there take Rte. 480 north of Rte. 404. Go left on Sunset Blvd. (across from grain elevators, before town) at 2.8 mi. Folow for 0.5 mi going left on the poorly signed Cow Barn Rd.. Make an immediate left on Ball Rd. after crossing the Railroad tracks. The plant entrance is 0.5 mi on your right. Will post an update later, Marshall Iliff miliff@aol.com Annapolis, MD ======================================================================== To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================== ==========================================================================
