I was at Lake Artemesia, PG MD both yesterday and today netting 9 species of warblers yesterday and 10 today for a total of 13 species and about 50 individuals. The species are similar to those begin reported from Rock Creek Park. In roughly decreasing order of abundance they were Redstart, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Black and White, Parula, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Yellowthroat, Blackpoll, Nashville, Canada, Blue-winged, Ovenbird. Other highlights include a calling Barred Owl and 5 Nighthawks, both mid-morning, 3 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 2 Scarlet Tanagers, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo both days, my first Swainson's thrush and Waxwing flocks of the fall. And more empidonax flycatchers than I could identify. If you are interested in working on you PG county lists, I heard rumors that the Patuxent Chapter of MOS has a field trip there tomorrow (Saturday). They will be meeting at 7AM in the Lake Artemesia parking lot off Berwyn Road in Berwyn Heights. The winds tonight will bring in the birds, but if it keeps up, finding them will be a challenge.
