At first light the big walnut tree in the center of the open area was crawling with warblers, and while we were trying to come to grips with these, we noticed that equally large numbers were moving through the trees across Glover Road. Probably 75% of the birds were never identified. After about 9 am the action slowed considerably, but with some searching a few more birds (and species) turned up in other areas nearby. Of the ones which we *did* identify, Barry and I had the following. I am sure other folks had some other species, but this is our count: 13 species of warbler -- ca. 35 Black-throated Green, 25 Magnolia, ca. 20 Chestnut-sided, 15 Redstarts, 12 Black and White, 12 Common Yellowthroat, 5 Bay-breasted, 3 Blackpolls, 5 Parula, 1 Nashville, 1 Wilson's, 2 Blackburnian, and 1 Oven- bird. Other migrants included: 2 Verrys, 2 Swainson's Thrush, 1 Gray-cheeked Thrush, 10 Red-eyed Vireo, 1 Yellow-throated Vireo (heard only), 1 Traill's- type Flycatcher, 1 Acadian, 2-3 Pewees, 5 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 3 Scarlet Tanagers, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet (first for us this season), 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (which may be the last of the season!). Also, there was a kettle of about 35 Broadwings of which we managed to see 2-3 through the trees, and a Kestrel. Should be good tomorrow as well-- Cheers, Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
