Maryland Rock Industries currently has a contract with PEPCO to mine the area for sand and gravel--for 20 years. Application for this Special Exception use of the property is now before the Chas Cty Board of Appeals. The citizens group is well organized with an excellent lawyer and needs support and donations, of course. For those unfamliar with the area this is a wonderful opportunity to learn why the State is interested in purchasing the area if the mining permit is denied. And why it must be saved for the public good. It is in the area of other acreage being purchased with state and federal funds as part of the Potomac Greenways. Come early and bird the adjacent Purse State Park with George Jett, 8 a.m. The bird trip is scheduled as an event of the Potomac Watershed Weekend.
