Need to send him/her our weekend totals. In going over the number of birds (mostly warblers) identified on Saturday vs. the percentage that several of us agreed got through un-ID'd, we estimate that upwards of 300-400 warblers passed through picnic areas 17/ 18 on Saturday. About 150 were successfully identified. The next day the birds were less mobile (less windy conditions, for one) and we probably did better on percentage identified, as we estimated 150-200 warblers of which birders ID'd (and counted) 135 or so. This is pretty good for a non-coastal location, and shows how important wildlife corridors like Rock Creek (which crosses DC's urban island in a N/S direction) are to migrants. Interestingly, the numbers of non-warbler migrants, with the exception of Red-eyed Vireos, seem rather low this year -- relatively few thrushes, orioles and tanagers, cuckoos virtually non-existent this autumn, although things could change. Have folks watching other inland locations noticed a similar pattern?
