Winds 0-5 from south. Best count of BW for season thus far, and todays Kestrels comprised 1/3 of count total for season. We had 6 visitors from Baltimore area who had read of the hawk watch in the Baltimore Sun. Now I KNOW I need new binos; one woman asked me " are those binoculars from World War 1? " !!!! Seasonal count up to 753 raptors- 73.5 hours total. 9/24 YTD TV-3 80 OS-2 43 BE-1 61 NH-0 5 SS-30 346 CH-6 24 RS-0 1 BW-43 139 RT-0 6 AK-10 32 ML-0 11 PG-0 1 UU-1 4 Other Migrants: 21 Canada Geese, Chimney Swift, Bobolink and, it seems, usual daily sighting of PILEATED WOODPECKER Butterflies: Viceroy, Zebra Swallowtail, Monarch, Tiger Swallowtail and Red Spotted Purple. It was originated in 1994 by Gary Griffith, founding President of the Cecil Bird Club, and Charlie Gant, also a CBC member and long time member of Hawk Mountain, dating back to the days of Maurice Broun. The hawk watch is located in a meadow just before the southern point of the Elk Neck Peninsula. The point, which faces south, is at the head waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and overlooks the North East and Elk Rivers. Our best annual count came last year with 7,017 raptors and a strictly volunteer effort.
