Wind from the NW all morning, changed few times from NW to W to NWW. Low clouds in am and partly cloudy came up around 12:30pm. Light rain and drizzle on ald off in afternoon. Raptor Migration Highlight: Slow morning with only two Sharpies and big action starting around 1:36pm. Biggest kettle today was 105 at 2:29pm headed SW. Other kettles including 33 at 1:36pm, 78 at 1:38pm and 48 at 1:40pm, all headed SW. Only eagle today was a imm or a 1st year at 2:42pm along with a Peregrine Falcon at his side. The numbers today may/may not be correct as I will recieve some count sheet from other counters. Non-Raptor Migration Highlight: Season high record for swifts and new record, old record was 4,486 in 1998. More jays on the move. Highlight of the day was 4 males Scarlet Tanagers, some immatures and one adult, all in one tree. Geese flight late in evening, a flock of 44 at 5:41pm headed SE. Butterfly Migration Highlight: Nice Monarch count today. Topography of the Site: - steep ridge about 180-200' above Belair Rd. - about 260' above sea level - It runs northeast to southwest - the first ridge west of the Chesapeake Bay - 12 miles from bay, 5 miles NW of Back River - my hawkwatch is 150 yards west of the ridge - Fairwood Ave runs along side of ridge My hawkwatch is located in my backyard. Most of the hawk flights arrive from the northeast and a few from the north and northeast-east.
