Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 08:16:41 -0400 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Fred Shaffer Subject: Probable Eared Grebe at Schoolhouse Pond My early morning walk around Schoolhouse Pond under dark skies and drizzl e proved to be well worth the effort as I got a good look at a grebe slowly swim the entire width of Schoolhouse Pond, diving once. It was clearly n ot a Pied Billed Grebe and was in winter plumage. It was dark above, whitis h- gray below (lower face, throat, neck, lower rear flanks). Rump was high in the water (again with white flanks). Bill was small, narrow, slightly upturned. I am not able to say with absolute certainty whether it was a Horned or Eared Grebe. However, the messages posted by Marshall Iliff and Rick Blo m last week lead me to believe that it was almost certainly an Eared Grebe. Other birds that I saw included 2 Great Blue Herons, 1 Great Egret, 2 Carolina Wrens, 1 White Eyed Vireo, 1 Wood Duck, several Cardinals, many Catbirds, a Carolina Chicadee, and a Tufted Titmouse.
