Subject: VA Broadwings, (not in MD) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1" MDOsprey, Karen and I hiked Old Rag mountain in the central district of Shenandoah NP, VA Sunday morning. Over the last half hour approaching the summit (9:45-10:15), we observed about 600 Broad-wings. They were slowly rising from the lowlands and gathering in kettles of 30-100 individuals. As soon as they exhausted th eir initial thermals, they dove to the next and rapidly left the area. The birds roosted in the valley along the ENE side of the mountain. The entire show was over in about 40 minutes, but it was quite impressive. It is amazing how fast they move when they track to their next thermal.
