The phalarope I saw there on Friday did hav e a uniform gray back rather than a more textured, streaked back. However, I thought I saw a solid black cap on the bird, and studying the illustratio ns in Peterson, and knowing that Red-necked was far more likely than Red at that location this time of year, I convinced myself that the bird I saw w as a Red-necked. I was probably wrong: I did not see the bird in flight, a nd it seems highly unlikely that a Red-necked Phalarope would be swimming around at Ridgely on Friday, and then a Red Phalarope would take its plac e on Monday. I may have been quick on the draw. I've seen many Red-necked Phalropes, but few Reds, especially at close range.
