Andy Rabin Gaithersburg, MD andyrabin@mindspring.com ---------------------------------------------------- Subject: WNV: Add Maryland From: Timothy Capone Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 01:43:55 -0400 DEAD CROWS TEST WNV+ IN MARYLAND: Information from: Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene : =20 Epidemiology & Disease Control Program http://edcp.org/html/wn_surv.html 242 dead birds have been tested for the West Nile virus in Maryland with 2 dead crows testing positive. The birds were found in Howard and Baltimore counties (Relay, MD and Columbia, MD). ... WHO HAS USED PESTICIDES TO COMBAT THE WNV?: Some counties in New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut have used pesticides. There will be spraying in the Maryland communities that have found the virus. In New York State, the 15 counties that have use Anvil are: Albany; Nassau ( although this county held off spraying until it received pressure from the State and New York City); New York City's 5 counties; Niagara; Onondaga; Oneida; Rensselaer; Rockland and Suffolk; Schenectady and Westchester. New York has over 70 counties. ... The pesticide used the most has been Anvil, which has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, but the required health risk studies performed by the manufacturer haven't been publicly released. This pesticide has been used in low doses and supposably breaks down quickly so it doesn't build up in the food chain. This pesiticide kills flying insects and isn't discriminatory, it kills beneficial insects and pest insects. Timothy J.
