The black extended forward from t he nape to form two what one might call lateral coronal stripes, between whi ch the midline of the crown was white. The white center of the crown was no t readily seen in a side view, but showed up clearly on a view from in fron t and slightly above the bird The lateral coronal stripes did not extend all the way forward on the head. We were satisfied this particular bird was a Red Phalarope, based on the thickness and length of the bill, the back being uniformly plain gray with only traces of whiter edgings on a f ew of the feathers (very hard to see at all), and the rather prominent white wing stripe (seen in flight). The black of the crown, nape, and hindneck seem compatible with this ID. Of course we can not say whether this was, or was not, the bird you saw.
