MOS. The title of the talk is "The Billion Bird Flight" -- actually, it is estimated that about 1.3 billion (yes, Billion) birds pass through southern Israel every spring from their wintering grounds in Africa to breeding areas in Europe and Asia. These include 39 species of raptor, huge storks, cranes, and pelicans as well as a wide variety of passerines, gulls, shorebirds and other waterbirds such as rails. In addition, the area hosts a number of resident species such as five species of sandgrouse, bustard, courser, and so forth. Barry and I went to Eilat, the crossroads of this migration, in March and April of this year and were really blown away. About 6-8 years ago, Claudia Wilds told us to "go to Israel" if we really were interested in migration. Well, we did and this talk is dedicated to Claudia. The talk will combine slides and video and will start at 8 pm (business meeting at 7:30). The meetings are held at the Potomac Presbyterian Church, 10301 River Rd. Take exit 39 from Beltway towards Potomac, cross Falls Rd. (Rt 189) and then continue just 1/4 mile to Gary Rd. on right. Turn right, then left immediately into church parking lot (you can also use school lot next door). Meetings are in Fellowship Hall on left downstairs. Cheers, Gail Mackiernan p.s. I will also be giving this talk Nov. 1 at Carroll Co.
