It would help because abbreviations are harder to interpret. A Sharpie actively hunting the woods around the hawk watch for at least 1/2 hr. resulted in a positive cacophony of shrieks, chips, alarms, squawks etc from the little passerine gang trying to avoid becoming breakfast. It was quite amusing. Charlie Gant came rolling in for an hour or so to keep me company under the raw gray and increasingly drizzly skies. Raptors were counted between 9-11,then steady drizzle convinced us to head home. If not for work this evening, I might have hung in there for a little longer. PG- 1 adult AK- 3 ML- 1 imm, 1 adult- the latter the last bird of the morning, perched scope view- very nice. SS-10 CH-2 BE-2 RT-1 TV-21 Passerines of note included a late BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, first heard " buzzing " and then viewed, a stunning look at a low, close BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and a SUMMER TANAGER, perched cooperatively in the " merlin snag " for a scope view. Warblers included PALM, YELLOW-RUMP, NASHVILLE and MAGNOLIA. In the fall I amuse myself with a list of all birds tallied from hawk watch, this mornings 36 species. Also of note were large numbers of GOLDEN SHAFTED FLICKERS, ~ 16, and several flocks of ~ 36 TREE SWALLOWS. The Turkey Point Hawk Watch is located in Cecil County, MD and is part of the Elk Neck State Park. It was originated in 1994 by Gary Griffith, founding President of the Cecil Bird Club, and Charlie Gant, also a CBC member and long time member of Hawk Mountain, dating back to the days of Maurice Broun. The hawk watch is located in a meadow just before the southern point of the Elk Neck Peninsula. The point, which faces south, is at the head waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and overlooks the North East and Elk Rivers. Our best annual count came last year with 7,017 raptors and a strictly volunteer effort.
