Charlie Gant and Amy Gordon tallied 86 in a major push between 10 and 12 ( only 4 birds between 9 and 10!! ), then an average of 20+ an hour from 12- 4 PM during my afternoon detail. I kept trying to leave, and birds kept coming. All heck was breaking loose when I arrived at 11:45, with sharpies, coops and red-shouldered all in the sky at once. Highlights of the afternoon were 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, an immature that flew feet off the ground, skimming across the meadow, and a higher adult male about 3:30 PM. A truly grand day with NW winds, 5-10 mph and clear blue skies, grand total 313 raptors. It was originated in 1994 by Gary Griffith, founding President of the Cecil Bird Club, and Charlie Gant, also a CBC member and long time member of Hawk Mountain, dating back to the days of Maurice Broun. The hawk watch is located in a meadow just before the southern point of the Elk Neck Peninsula. The point, which faces south, is at the head waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and overlooks the North East and Elk Rivers. Our best annual count came last year with 7,017 raptors and a strictly volunteer effort.
