Speak of the devil, I made a brief stop this afternoon at Pine Knob Road off
Rt 32 in eastern Carroll Co, one of the sites where the crossbills were
repeatedly seen in the winter of 97-98, and had at least 4 tooting
Red-breasted Nuthatches. I also heard one at the Liberty Lake boat launch
area off Oakland Mills Rd.

The cones in the white pines seem to be quite thick again, as in 97-98, and
that crossbill invasion was preceded by an irruption of Red-breasted
Nuthatches.

Is this an omen?
