24 October
0755-1250. Walked one of my longer loops this morning at
McKee-Beshers. Circled the impoundments, then walked east on Hunting
Quarter Rd. almost back to River Rd.. Went to the eastern fields looking for
sparrows ; back west to the central road, onward to the towpath and Horsepen
Hiker-Biker, and back through the fields to the impoundments. Ended up with
50 species. Highlights were a Merlin at the impoundments and a Pine Siskin
flying over. Good day for fruit eaters- 10 Eastern Bluebirds, 6 Hermit
Thrushes, 202 Am. Robins , 55 Cedar Waxwings and 65 Myrtle Warblers. Other
notable counts and/or species were 7 Green-winged Teals, 3 Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers, 8 Northern Flickers, 4 Eastern Phoebes, 8 Winter Wrens, one
Catbird(little bit on the late side), 3 Yellow Palm Warblers, 28 Swamp
Sparrows(including one which seem to still have its rufous crown), 108
White-throated Sparrows, and 33 Rusty Blackbirds. Interesting behaviors
noted were rusty blackbirds in the trees eating wild grapes and 5 Turkey
Vultures perching on the communication tower on the north side of River
Road.
