The owls were near the upper elevations of the wilderness. On our hike out, two days later, we carefully scanned all of the evergreens in the vicinity of the original sighting. No owls; however, about 1/8 mile away we came across a VERY fresh titmouse kill and an even fresher pellet on top of the partially eaten prey. Of course, I have digital images of this in all of its gory detail. It is likely that we scared the predator before we rounded the corner, but we didn't see who or what, and this was about noon. The pellet seems large for a Saw-Whet, but I don't have any experience at owl identification from this end (no pun intended). I also thought Saw-Whets are more of a rodent eater (which you eluded to in your earlier reply), not a bird catcher. We have heard both Barred and Great Horned owls in the valley, so it could've have been either of them also. It just seemed too coincident that it was very near the Saw-Whet owl roost. Any further comments on this?
