A single RING-NECKED DUCK was swimming around with the usual AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS and MALLARDS. At around 10 a.m. in nearby Kenilworth Park, an adult PEREGRINE FALCON WAS harassing CROWS, and an AMERICAN KESTREL was perched on the football goalposts. In the park's overgrown area, abutting the woods by the Anacostia, there were lots more SONG SPARROWS, together with at least 10 SAVANNAH SPARROWS and a single ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. (This last bird was very drab gray on the head and back, had a distinct light superciliary line and pale yellow under-tail coverts) The GREAT CORMORANT was seen swimming around, then sitting on a floating log near the Naval Research Lab. at about noon. As Gail MacKiernan pointed out in her post yesterday, this bird is a young one, with dark upper chest contrasting with pale belly -- just the opposite of the young Double-cresteds nearby (as well as being markedly bigger). I turned up just as Bill Bobbins and his brother were leaving, from having looked at it, so I did not have to search it out for very long. This bird is best seen from the Alexandria, VA, side of the river, near the power plant cooling water outfall, since there's no public access to NRL. One can park on 3rd St. or nearby streets and walk to the bike path by the river by way of a cutoff path just downstream of the PEPCO plant. I did not see the Black Scoter reported earlier by Bill.
